Two men with a love for Jesus and passion for helping those in need brought a profound service to many area farm workers. Pastor John Outlaw of Fellowship Baptist Church and Chaplain Bob Miller of Ocala Farm Ministry teamed to together host a traveling Dental bus to offer services to those in need. May 24-29, the Florida Baptist Mobile Dental Care Unit chalked its wheels at the future site of the Ocala Farm Ministry, Robert Scanlon Community Center. Area churches heeded the call and several volunteers from Fellowship Baptist Church, Hope Church, Oakcrest Baptist Church and Peniel Baptist Church brought food, translated paper work, assisted with patient sign in and ministering the Gospel.
Betty Jones of Fellowship took the reins of organization and coordinated the efforts. She has spent the last three months contacting volunteers, dentists, bilingual assistants, and patients. “I could not have done this without the assistance of many. It has been a true blessing to service to so many”.
The short time period was due to a cancellation, the bus would not have been able to be here until July 2010. God’s hand at work with a cancellation pushed the efforts into high gear.
Patients came in droves; walking, riding bikes in the stormy weather, brutal heat and some just to be on a waiting list. Every patient was able seen or were referred for services. One man rode his bike in the rain to have three teeth pulled and smiled as he rode his bike home. Final numbers speak for themselves; one hundred thirteen patients served with over $25,000 in donated services, five hundred fifty volunteer hours and twenty-three professions of faith. The couple who manage the clinic,Tom and Marsha Moylan, who travel with the unit full time, were astounded by the efficiency of volunteers and the numbers of patients served. “This has been a record breaking event, extremely organized and efficient, the bar has been raised.”
What a true testament; a church does not have to have walls to serve, just a heart for the people of God.
